SOUTH FLORIDA FREE BEACHES' PETITION DRIVE FOR IMPROVEMENTS AT HAULOVER PARK
South Florida Free Beaches has obtained eight hundred individual signed petitions from beach users requesting
improvements for Haulover Park. The petition forms were included in the Spring 2005 issue of
The SunDial and also distributed at Haulover Beach.
Many of the items in the petition involved projects that have been approved and budgeted, but which
we feel are being executed too slowly—like the new restroom that was approved in February 2002—clearly
a health issue considering the large number of users.
We are also requesting new budgeting for dedicated uniformed police officers for Haulover Park. The Park Department intially refused this suggestion;
subsequently it offered to budget around $40,000. This sum is inadequate, considering what the County
is spending for police at other venues (see letter below); therefore we are bringing this issue
before the County Commission.

These petitions have been copied and were delivered to the thirteen Miami-Dade
County Commissioners and to County Mayor Alvarez at the beginning of September.

Richard Mason, SFFB President, spoke at the County Budget Hearing on September 6th requesting the budgeting
of funds for assigned police at Haulover Park. Twelve of the Commissioners were present at the hearing.
Additionally, a letter has been sent to each of the City Councilors of Sunny Isles Beach, Bal Harbour, Bay Harbor Islands, North Miami, North Miami Beach, and Aventura,
requesting their support with the County on this issue.
